Cthulhu's Garden | Ocean Health PSA
Cthulhu’s Garden
A PSA video developed to bring awareness to the preservation of coral reefs. The piece was constructed over two weeks with a cut limit of 45 seconds. The piece was commissioned for public consumption, appealing primarily to younger audiences through strong pathos and high-saturation visual interest. All assets for the sequence are originally illustrated.
Concepting and Storyboards
The piece began with research. I investigated key concern areas of Ocean health, namely surrounding the conservation of coral reefs, and explored Ocean health agencies such as Coral Reef Alliance.
After outlining the key data points that I needed to touch on in the video, I created a drafted a script and recorded VO to share with peers for feedback. I revised the final script and began exploring visual aesthetics and story structure.
I wanted to target younger audiences with this video, and to bring a layer of pathos to an issue that may seem geographically remote from human life.
Given the subject matter of coral reefs, I concepted the narrative of a key character, Cthulhu, who spends his time maintaining coral reefs. This character would give audiences an empathetic, anthropocentric figure for audiences to identify with and, in concept, would serve as a figurehead for a larger PSA campaign. Bright colors and an illustrative style were also implemented to bring emotional intrigue into the piece and speak to its intended younger viewership.
